The Case for Fiji by Superyacht

Fiji is what people imagine when they first say the word “charter”, water in shades that look colour-graded, reefs that have never seen an anchor dragged carelessly, villages where a sevusevu ceremony still opens the bay to you. It is also, from Australia, genuinely hard to do casually. That is exactly why it works as a superyacht destination: the difficulty filters the crowd.

The geography

The charter grounds that matter are west of Viti Levu. The Mamanucas are the close-in chain, Cloud 9, Monuriki of Cast Away fame, surf at Cloudbreak for the brave. North of them, the Yasawas run for eighty kilometres of volcanic ridgelines, empty beaches and the Blue Lagoon. Two weeks covers both without hurrying; ten days does it with intent. The ten-day itinerary lays it out bay by bay.

The crossing

Getting a yacht there is the real undertaking, an open-ocean passage of some 1,500 nautical miles from the Australian east coast, made in the calmer windows and planned months out. In our fleet that is Impulsive's run: she is the hull certified and equipped for the passage, and she spends the heart of the season in Fijian water. Guests do not make the crossing; you fly in and step aboard with the yacht already on station.

The yacht makes the crossing so you do not have to. Fly in over the reef, and the tender is waiting at the wharf.

Getting there is the easy part

Winds are steady trade-season southeasterlies from May to October, which is also the dry season and the charter window. Book the season before, not the month before, the good weeks go to the people who planned.
